What size should a video be for each platform?
Every major platform takes one of four shapes. These are the sizes to export at, and the Mockya canvas that makes each one:
| Platform | Size (pixels) | Shape | Mockya canvas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | 9:16 |
| Instagram feed | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | 4:5 |
| Instagram and Facebook Stories | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | 9:16 |
| TikTok | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | 9:16 |
| YouTube | 1920 × 1080 (or 3840 × 2160) | 16:9 | 16:9 |
| YouTube Shorts | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | 9:16 |
| LinkedIn feed | 1080 × 1350 or 1080 × 1080 | 4:5 or 1:1 | 4:5, 1:1 |
| X (Twitter) | 1920 × 1080 or 1080 × 1080 | 16:9 or 1:1 | 16:9, 1:1 |
| Facebook feed | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | 4:5 |
| Website hero | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | 16:9 |
| Product Hunt gallery image | 1270 × 760 | about 5:3 | 4:3 |
Platforms change their recommendations from time to time. Before a big launch, check each platform's help centre for its current maximum length and file size.
Which size should I make if I can only make one?
4:5 at 1080 × 1350. It fills more of a phone screen than a square, every feed shows it uncropped, and it still reads in a vertical player with bars. If you can make two, add 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, where vertical video gets the whole screen.
Where are the safe zones in a vertical video?
In a 9:16 video the platform draws its own interface over yours: the account name and caption along the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons down the right. As a rule of thumb:
- Keep text out of the top 250 pixels and the bottom 350 pixels of a 1080 × 1920 frame.
- Keep important content away from the right-hand 120 pixels.
- Put the product in the middle of the frame, where nothing covers it.
A device mockup handles this well: the device sits in the centre of the canvas with margin all around, so nothing important ends up under a button.
Which format and frame rate should I export?
- MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Every platform accepts it, and it plays everywhere.
- 30 fps for most videos. 60 fps for screen recordings that scroll quickly.
- 1080 pixels on the short side. Higher only helps on YouTube and your own site, where 4K is worth it.
- GIF only where video won't play, such as some email clients and docs. Files are larger and colours poorer.
What size is an App Store app preview?
App previews have their own exact sizes for each device class; for the largest iPhones, a portrait preview is 886 × 1920. Apple also limits their length and expects footage captured from the app itself, so check the current list in App Store Connect before you export. Screenshots and marketing pages have no such rules, and that's where a device frame does most of its work.
How do I make every size from one recording?
Cropping a 16:9 video down to 9:16 throws away most of the frame. In Mockya, each canvas is composed for its own shape instead: the device is placed and sized to fit 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9 separately, from the same recording, in one export.
- Drop your recording into the studio and pick a device and an angle.
- In the export dialog, tick every canvas you need: 16:9, 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 2:1, and 4:3.
- Export once. Each extra canvas costs half the first.
Questions
What is the best video size for all social media?
There isn't one size for everything. If you can make only one, 1080 × 1350 (4:5) plays well in every feed; add 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, and 1920 × 1080 (16:9) for YouTube and your website.
What size is an Instagram Reel?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical video. Keep text away from the top and bottom, where the app draws its own buttons and captions.
What size is a TikTok video?
1080 × 1920 pixels, 9:16. TikTok plays other shapes, but anything else gets bars or a crop.
Should I export social video at 30 or 60 fps?
30 fps is the standard and keeps files small. Use 60 fps for screen recordings that scroll a lot, where it keeps text sharp in motion.
